“Real” Books or Ebooks?

November 16th, 2007 Posted in Ask Hope

Today I just have a quick question that I would love to get your input on. Do you have a preference over reading “real” books or eBooks?

I personally read a ton of ebooks. In fact, I should start keeping up with how many I read in a year’s time. It would probably blow my mind to know how many I go through. There’s something about the instant delivery that makes ebooks so convenient. Plus there’s the option of printing them out if you’re too tired to read them on the computer, which I do A LOT.

But I do love my “real” books, too. There’s nothing like being able to carry a book in my purse, knowing when I catch a few minutes of free time I can just whip it out and read a few more pages. Some of my most favorite books are full of highlighting and notes, too. I don’t like to mark up books, but there are some that I just can’t read without adding notes to them.

So what’s your take on this? Would you take a real book over an ebook on a computer screen any day? Or do you prefer ebooks? I’d love to hear what you think!

    Hey Hope,
Personally, I prefer an actual book in my hands than reading one online. The only ebooks I’ll get are technical books, they’re easy to store and great for quick reference. After looking at a monitor all day, I don’t want to read a novel off the screen. There’s something deeply satisfying in taking a book outside, or lounging on the couch, or in bed to read. I have some books that I’ve gotten in both forms, just in case the physical one is lost (read: lent out and never returned) or damaged, I’ll still have it in the files on my comp.

I agree with you, Harrison. Books are so much more portable and that’s a huge part of why I love them so much. :) Thanks for your input!

    I do PREFER a “real” book, but I am a fan of e-books as well… :D

I also prefer a “real” book so I can curl up in bed to read, which is actually the only place I prefer to read. I will, however, invest in an e-book if it’s a reference or how-to, because, like Harrison said, it’s a “quick reference.” These books are usually writing-related, so I can click on the links from my computer. But when it comes to reading fiction, I do prefer the real deal. ;)

    I hear ya, Angela. :)

Misti, same here. I think I’ve purchased 2 or 3 fictional ebooks, but the majority are technical ones I can read fast.

Real books, hands down. I have a hard time reading off a screen in general, and I tend to find it not only hard on the eyes, but hard on the head. It’s very easy for me to be distracted, too.

Real books also sum up my idea of “Jamie time”. They’re not work. Ebooks represent work (I write them, I research them, I buy them to research for work, etc). Real books represent a break from reality and the ability to slip into another realm - at least for a little while.
