Writing By Hand

September 7th, 2007 Posted in Writing tips

There is something about writing by hand that appeals to me. It might be because it’s away from the computer. Or maybe because it’s a manual process, unlike tapping keys on a keyboard.

At least a couple of times each week I grab a notebook and pen (or pencil) and walk away from the computer for a while. I usually sit in the living room or lay on my bed and write by hand. Sometimes I like to sit on the front porch swing and write, too.

The feel of the pen in my hand, watching as the ink flows across the page, forming shapes, twists and turns, settles me. It brings me back to the basics–writing.

If I sit at the computer for too long, I tend to wander. I surf to blogs or chat with friends through instant messaging. My latest craze is Twitter. All these little things add up to a huge chunk of my time being gobbled up on any given day if I’m not careful.

Last night I started outlining a new book by hand. It was an exhilerating experience to sit down and map out a new project in my notebook. I even got a little crazy with it and drew pictures during my brainstorming process. Fun!

Sometimes you just need to break away and get back to the basics of writing. Don’t forget that!

    Hi Hope!

I agree with you about the comforting feeling of the pen forming those curves. Nothing like a fine phallus with smooth-flowing ink that doesn’t blob up as you write.

Although… I have a confession to make. I think I must be overtaxing myself lately, and it’s affecting my ability to use a pen! I’ll be sitting there interviewing clients on the phone, and I have this constant problem where my pen jumps ahead to write the next letter of the word before I’ve had time to write the letter before it!

Has anyone experienced this phenomenon? Is it a side effect of Too Much Typing and not enough writing by hand? I’m starting to feel err, handwriting handicapped!

    Thanks for another great post!

    Dina

Hope, I know just what you mean. I buy beautiful journals and write in them: some have handmade paper covers, some gorgeous slick covers. Have my eye on a leather one. ;)

My tecchie friends call me low-tech.

I can hardly ever pass up a pretty journal. In fact, I bought myself another one today. (Refer to my short bio in the top left corner.) :)
